You can learn a lot about a person from their coffee order.

Not everything.

But enough.

Every friend group has the person who orders the same thing every single time, the person who needs eleven minutes with the menu, and the person who says “I'll just have what you're having” and then orders something completely different.

Here's the group chat, in coffee form.

01 — THE FLAT WHITE PERSON

They don't need to look at the menu.

They already know.

“Flat white, please.”

No syrup. No extra anything. Just espresso and silky milk.

They like things simple, but not too simple.

Probably has strong opinions about restaurants.

Probably says “let's just get one more coffee.”

Probably means it.

02 — THE ICED LATTE PERSON

It's 12°C outside.

They're still ordering iced.

They'll defend it too.

“I just prefer cold coffee.”

Fair enough.

Their drink is espresso, milk and ice. Clean. Reliable. Always looks good in a glass.

They're also the most likely person in the group to say:

“Wait, don't drink it yet. I need a picture.”

03 — THE OAT MILK PERSON

They know exactly what they want.

Oat milk.

Every time.

No explanation necessary.

It brings a natural sweetness and creamy texture to coffee, which makes it especially good in lattes and iced drinks.

They've tried almond milk.

Once.

Never again.

04 — THE AMERICANO PERSON

Hot water.

Espresso.

Done.

They're not here to play games.

They might be the friend who arrives fifteen minutes early.

Or the friend who says they don't care where you eat and then rejects every restaurant suggestion.

Either way, their coffee order is refreshingly straightforward.

05 — THE “WHAT'S GOOD?” PERSON

They have absolutely no idea what they want.

They also don't want to admit it.

So they ask the barista.

“What's your favourite?”

This is actually a good strategy.

If anyone knows what's good, it's probably the person making the coffee.

They'll either discover their new favourite drink or order exactly what they always order.

There is no middle ground.

06 — THE EXPERIMENTAL ONE

They saw something on the menu called brown butter espresso tonic with orange peel and immediately ordered it.

They don't need to know what's in it.

That's what ordering it is for.

Sometimes it's incredible.

Sometimes it's confusing.

Either way, they will make everyone try it.

They're the reason coffee menus are allowed to be fun.

07 — THE EXTRA SHOT PERSON

One shot?

Not enough.

Two?

Getting closer.

“Can I add another shot?”

This person does not come to cafés for a gentle little pick-me-up.

They came to start the day.

Do not ask them if they want decaf.

08 — THE DECAF PERSON

And then there's the person who has figured it out.

They want the ritual.

They want the flavour.

They want the little cup in their hand.

They just don't want to be vibrating at 4pm.

Decaf gets a bad reputation, but good decaf can still be complex, sweet and genuinely delicious.

Honestly?

They might be the most sensible person here.

09 — THE SWEET COFFEE PERSON

Vanilla.

Caramel.

Mocha.

Honey.

Brown sugar.

They're not pretending coffee has to be serious.

They like their drink sweet, creamy and maybe a little dessert-like.

And we support it.

Coffee doesn't have to be black to be taken seriously.

10 — THE “JUST BLACK COFFEE” PERSON

No milk.

No sugar.

No fuss.

Just coffee.

They might tell you they like tasting the beans.

They might actually know what they're talking about.

Or they might simply enjoy black coffee.

Either way, respect.

THE REAL TEST

The funniest thing about a friend group is that everyone thinks their order says something about everyone else.

The flat white person thinks the sweet coffee person has no taste.

The sweet coffee person thinks the flat white person is taking coffee too seriously.

The experimental one thinks everyone else is boring.

The iced latte person doesn't care because they're already halfway through their drink.

And somehow, everyone still ends up at the same table.

Which is probably the best thing about coffee.

Different orders. Same excuse to hang out.
